Penguin presents the audiobook of A Gift for Dying by M. J. Arlidge.  Â

Could you live with knowing how you'll die? Â

Adam Brandt is used to dealing with all kinds of people - as a consulting psychologist with the Chicago Police Department he has faced his share of criminals. But Kassie Wojcek is like no one else he's encountered - 15 years old and burdened, she says, with a terrible gift: she knows how and when you will die.Â

After claiming to 'feel' the horrific murder of the first victim, Kassie is caught up in the hunt for a sadistic serial killer terrorising Chicago, frightened that people will die without her help. Kassie pulls Adam into the investigation, determined to stop the torture she sees coming. But as the body count rises, Adam must ask himself if her gift is real or if he is putting his faith in someone far more dangerous than he realised. Â

Events soon spiral out of control as the case and their personal lives intertwine. The boundaries of right and wrong shift, the lines between the hunter and the hunted blur, and one thing becomes clear: Kassie is in the sights of a killer....Â

I really enjoyed this almost as much as his other series.

Being a massive fan of the authors DI Helen Grace series, there was no way I could resist reading his new stand alone novel. Glad to report that it certainly didn’t disappoint.Kassie is a young and vulnerable teen who has an unfortunate gift that runs in the family of being able to see how and when people are going to die. Imagine the people you love, friends and family, and knowing something like that. It is definitely more a curse than a gift that’s for sure.Adam pretty much has it all. Even though his job is demanding, he has a wife and a baby on the way and life is definitely looking good. Meeting Kassie makes him question his own beliefs being a forensic psychologist and he is definitely out of his comfort zone when it comes to her.The killer in this novel is a very sick and twisted one. The killings will without a doubt make you cringe but had me enthralled never the less. With a male and female protagonist and a female detective running the case, this really does make for a compulsive read. There are a great mix of characters that really add to the appeal of the story also.A Gift For Dying shows off the authors writing skills even more. It is guaranteed to win over new fans as well as old and I hope that he has plenty more stand alone’s in the pipe line after this one. A dark, twisted and gripping read. Loved it!My thanks to Tracy Fenton, NetGalley and Penguin UK – Michael Joseph for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.

The entire premise of the book being that Kassie can predict how and when people will die had me a tiny bit skeptical starting off with this book. I was worried it would take a dive into completely unrealistic voodoo and I would lose total interest in the plot. How wrong I was to worry! I completely appreciate that despite this somewhat supernatural element to the story, it’s a story that is otherwise grounded by complex and broken characters and that makes it compulsively readable.I loved Kassie’s character. That this gift/curse would be something that would isolate her in life was entirely more believable than any other situation that M.J. could have put her in. I spent the entire book feeling so sorry for Kassie and rooting so hard for her to come out on top in the end. Even in some of her more crazy actions - I know I’m getting older when my reaction to young characters making dangerous and impulsive decisions is to want to sit them down and lecture them, but I digress - she was still relatable and believable in how she was trying to tackle the increasingly terrifying position she was in. I think I also just very much appreciated that M.J. never took the easy way out with this plot point - no one just outright believes Kassie when she tells them what she can see, and that is something I ADORE in a book - a very honest reaction to off kilter news like that.I won’t offer any spoilers, because this is one of those stories you want to go into knowing very little so you can fully enjoy how the story plays out, but I will say that I was surprised to be moved so emotionally by this book in parts. It is very rare for me to really have an emotional connection to a mystery/suspense/thriller but in this case I did. That has piqued my interest in checking out more of M.J.’s work, because quite frankly, it was the exact right combination of suspense and drama to make this a highly refreshing read for me this month. If you are a bookworm who likes your suspense with a little bit of a wild and unique twist, this is CERTAINLY one I would recommend for you. It’s a compulsively readable summer pick, and will make for the perfect companion while soaking up these sunshine rays!

A GIFT FOR DYING by M.J. Arlidge is the kind of twisted and dark story that really gets under your skin and leaves a mark with its sheer genius of storytelling. There is a serial killer, the likes that Chicago has never seen before, and the city is out of its depth in their hunt for this psychopath. But among the crowd, there is a young girl who has lived with a special and terrifying power her whole life. Her name is Kassie and when she looks anyone in the eye she can foresee their death and when it is likely to happen. Troubled, lost, and very alone, Kassie seeks solitude from the madness but when she meets the victim of this monster that is on the loose, she believes that she can help these people if only someone would believe her. Adam is a forensic psychologist who has a lovely wife and baby on the way when he takes on Kassie's case. Wanting to help her find some happiness he believes he can make her understand that the psychic power she thinks she has is not real. But when Kassie predicts the death of three prominent people in the area, Adam cannot help but wonder could she be telling the truth? And are they all being led down a preordained dark and destructive path? This story is unbelievably gripping and I could not put it down until I finished reading it in the wee hours of the morning. The story is told from different character's points of view so we get to really know Kassie and Adam, and we get an insight into the victim's lives, the detective in charge and the killer's too. I felt so much for Kassie because she is such a young girl with no support, dealing with something that nobody should ever have to face. There were times when I was horrified, tearful, angry, and resigned to what was happening which goes to show just how good this author is at pulling emotions from readers.A GIFT FOR DYING by M.J. Arlidge is an absolute masterpiece and is perfect for readers who enjoy a dark and grisly story with plenty of energy from beginning to end.
