From the Back Cover Williamson County in southern Illinois has been the scene of almost unparalleled violence, from the Bloody Vendetta between two families in the 1870s through the Herrin Massacre of 1922, Ku Klux Klan activities that ended in fatalities, and the gang war of the 1920s between the Charlie Birger and Shelton brothers gangs. Paul Angle was fascinated by this more-than-fifty-year history, and his account of violence has become a classic.
About the Author Paul M. Angle, a noted Lincoln scholar, was director of the Chicago Historical Society from 1945 to 1965. Isabel Wallace was only four years old when her father fell at Shiloh. She lived at The Oaks, the family home in Ottawa, Illinois, until her death in 1933. John Y. Simon is a professor of history at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He is the editor of "The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant," published by Southern Illinois University Press.
